Out of the box experience...
I like it when a company
takes the extra step to make their product stand out just a little.
Most of the time we open a power supply box, we see the power supply in
some bubble wrap and everything else is just stuffed in the box.
Etasis first puts a nice cardboard cover on top with a cut-out for the
owners manual. Under that is the power supply but in this case all
of the extras are housed in their own box. It's a much neater
appearance.
The power supply
housing is a little different than normal. Most of the power
supplies that we come across have a large 120mm fan on the bottom as an
intake. Etasis uses a smaller intake fan and positions it on the
front of the power supply. When I first saw this, I was a little
concerned with the fan being obstructed.

As you can see clearance is
not an issue. One way that Etasis solved the clearance issue was
to move the cables to the other side of the power supply. If you
look at the picture above, you will see the cables coming out of the
power supply on the side that's closest to the motherboard. Most
power supplies have their cables coming from the other side. By
moving the cables, it helps clear the way for airflow and it makes it a
whole lot easier for us to neatly route them.
The cabling is pretty
much what you would expect with a few exceptions. The ET850
has; 24-pin main power, 4 pin auxillary, 8 pin auxillary, 8 molex, 8
SATA, 4 PCI-E and a floppy drive connector. Having 8 SATA
connectors along with 4 PCI-E connectors is great. This power
supply is certified to run two 8800GTX video cards in SLI without
using any kind of adapters.
Testing
For this review we'll be
using a gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 motherboard which is based on Intel's
965X chipset. The CPU is overclocked to 3.2GHz using a 400MHz FSB
and voltage of 1.325. Here is a basic rundown of the test system:

I will be using a volt
meter and taking the readings directly from the power supply. I'm
not too fond of monitoring programs as they can vary from program to
program. I monitored the voltages at idle and load and here are the
results.

Conclusion
The need for larger power supplies is
here. When looking for a large power supply, the first thing I
look for is quality. I always say that quality is key with a power
supply and it's true. Etasis has delivered a top quality power supply.
The voltages didn't even budge during testing. $225 may seem a
little pricy at first, but doing a quick comparison to other power
supplies, 850w and higher, I found that $225 is right on par with the
rest of them. At this price though you are getting a top quality
power supply that has a 3-year warranty and will deliver quality power
to your machine. This is a really good power supply and it's
Cluboverclocker recommended.
