USB 2.0 is pretty much the
interface of choice for Windows based PCs. Every modern system and OEM
motherboard will have many USB 2.0 capable ports, and it offers a maximum
data transfer of 480 Megabits per second. You can add more ports to your
computer by adding a USB 2.0 compliant hub, which can be found at almost every
major discount super store - such as Walmart and Target. Attaching a USB 1.1
device to a USB 2.0 port cane be done without any special cabling or adapters.

Firewire also has
two distinct versions; Firewire 400 (IEE-1394) and Firewire 800 (IEEE-1394-b).
As the name implies, Firewire 400 can transfer data at 400 Megabits per second
while Firewire 800 transfers twice as fast at 800 Megabits per second. While
most motherboards offer Firewire 400 ports, it will take a fairly new system or
OEM motherboard to be bundled with Firewire 800. Unlike USB 2.0, Firewire 400
and Firewire 800 each use a separate cable; six pin for Firewire 400 and nine
pin for Firewire 800. While backwards compatibility is
possible, it requires a special adapter cable to use a Firewire 400 device on a
Firewire 800 host. For the most part, Firewire hubs are not as easily obtained.
Instead, each device you attach to the host usually has at least one other port
to connect multiple devices in a daisy-chain.
