Vantec Laptop Coolers LPC-301 & LPC-305

LPC-301

The back of the LPC-301 is pretty plain.  It has the on/off switch, variable fan control and power input.  The LPC-301 gets it's power from the USB cable.  There is no need for external power.

LPC-305

The LPC-305 on the other hand is loaded with USB ports.  The LPC-305 is a USB 2.0 powered hub.  This does not mean that you need to have the power cord plugged in.  If your USB device requires a powered hub then yes you will need the extra power.  If not, the hub will work just fine without it plugged in.  Also, the hub will not add USB 2.0 functionality to your laptop, unless you already have a USB 2.0 port.  If you have an older laptop with USB 1.1, the hub will only be a 1.1 hub.

Testing

For testing, I took a friends laptop and ran a round of Sisoft Sandra's burn-in wizard.  I then added the laptop coolers and repeated the tests.  The temperature was measured with an external probe.  Both laptop coolers performed exactly the same.  This is expected as the only difference between the two are the 4-port USB hub.

Full load, no cooler 33.8C
Full load, LPC-301 24.5C
Full load, LPC-305 24.5C

Nearly a 10C degree drop is nothing to laugh at.

Conclusion

Running a cooler laptop is an all around good thing.  A cooler laptop will help prevent CPU throttling which will help keep your laptop running it's fastest.  A cooler laptop could also help get the most out of your battery, and finally a cooler laptop will last longer.  Heat is a major enemy to all electronic devices, keeping them cool will help extend the life of your product.
