CPU Performance

Next we take the Intel C2D E6700 CPU we obtained from ClubIT for a spin. We'll also stick with SiSoft Sandra for the CPU benchmarks. The E6700 isn't quite the overclocker the E6400 or E6600 is, but it's one powerful CPU for the price.

Motherboard Settings

SLI/EPP Memory Setting: Enabled
CPU/Memory Link: Unlinked
CPU Overclock % 0%
Memory Bus Speed: 1066MHz (default)
Memory Voltage: 2.1v (default)
Memory Timings: 5-5-5-15 (default)
CPU Bus Speed: 1066MHz (default)
Final CPU Clock Speed: 2.66GHz (default)

SiSoft Sandra Processor Arithmetic

Sandra Processor Arithmetic results shown above in red: 24458/16983

According to SiSoft's Processor Arithmetic average for a C2D E6700 processor, our E6700 running on the 680i motherboard is above average.

SiSoft Sandra Processor Multi-Media

Sandra Processor Multi-Media results shown above in red: 146398/79114

Once again, our Processor Multi-Media score is above average for a C2D E6700. It looks to me like a trend is forming here...

CPU Overclocking

Now let's try out the handy CPU overclock feature under the FSB & Memory Config screen. EVGA has made it easy to overclock by allowing the user to use preset percentages. By using this setting, the CPU/Memory FSB Link is "unlinked" allowing the user to overclock the CPU only. This is a very handy feature for a quick overclock. The available settings are Disabled, 0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, 5%, and Max. No offense to the new overclockers out there because you have to start somewhere, but this setting is pretty much for the newbie only. After days of playing around with the percentage setting, I've come to the conclusion that although enabling this setting turns on EPP and EPP works very well, the percentage settings do very little for memory or CPU performance, even at "Max". Because of this, I'm going to skip showing you any benchmarks using the percentage overclock setting. Instead we'll do it the old school way and enter in our own overclocking bus speeds. Let's try it out.

CPU Overclocking - 3.0GHz

Motherboard Settings

SLI/EPP Memory Setting: Disabled
CPU/Memory Link: Unlinked
CPU Overclock % Disabled
Memory Bus Speed: 1066MHz
Memory Voltage: 2.1v
Memory Timings: 5-5-5-15
CPU Bus Speed: 1200MHz
Final CPU Clock Speed: 3.0GHz

3.0Ghz was an easy target to hit as most Intel C2Ds will overclock to 3Ghz right out of the box. Still, an easy overclock means a very nice performance increase. Let's try to wind this baby up to it's max!
