So what happens when a European based memory
manufacturer wants to get their silicone into the American markets?
They contact a few tech sites and get samples into the hands of
anxious reviewers, that's what! Since competition is still pretty
fierce in the DDR2 market, I'm still more than ready to take a look
at anything new. Sure, I will admit that I have my
favorites -- don't we all? I mean, lines in the sand can get drawn pretty fast when overclockers
start talking about Who makes What better. Still, it's nice to get a
fresh look at something new! So it is with complete subjectivity that I dive
into a round of testing with a 4GB dual channel kit of DDR2-1066
from
Compustocx.
Compustocx may be a new name to me, but they
aren't new company at all. On the
contrary, they have supplied over 4 million Apple systems
with memory products world wide and continue to be one of Germany's
top memory suppliers for Apple machines. Even thought Apple and
Windows users butt heads on many fronts, I can't ignore the
aggressive quality control standards that Apple has implemented.
Components must be 100% compatible (and stable) in order to be
recognized by Apple specifications. Since Apple has begun using
Intel Processors and Chipsets at the core of their systems, it only
stands to reason that we can benefit from a memory product that is
tested so stringently.

We've all seen countless sets of memory modules that run with on a 1066Mhz bus with the kind of
strobe timings that the CEC modules call for. But most non-JEDEC
memory running in excess of 800Mhz usually require in at least 2.1
volts - usually more. The specifications for the Compustocx CEC
memory shows 1.95 volts, +/- .25 which gives us a useable vDIMM
range of 1.7v through 2.2v.
