Testing

Since we will be overclocking in this review, choosing the right hardware is extremely important. For this review, I decided to go with the following setup because I know for a fact that this system will run as high as 290MHz FSB (580MHz DDR).

Hardware Model Provided By
Motherboard: Albatron 865PE/PE Pro II
BIOS: v1.03b
Albatron
CPU: Intel Pentium 4
2.4GHz
Model C

CPU Cooler: Thermalright SLK-947U Heatsink Factory
Memory:

Video Card: Crucial Radeon 9800 Pro Crucial
Hard Drive(s): Seagate SATA V

SATA Controller: RocketRAID 1542 HighPoint Tech

To benchmark the memory, I'll be sticking to SiSoft Sandra. I'll start out at the memory's default rating and settings and work my up the overclocking ladder, if possible. Here is how it went down:

Memory Timings Voltage DDR Bus Speed Sandra Score
2-3-2-6 (default) 2.6v (default) 400MHz (default) 4204/4203
2-3-2-6 2.6v 440MHz FAIL
2-3-2-6 2.7v 440MHz FAIL
2-3-3-7 2.6v 440MHz 4614/4620
2-3-3-7 2.6v 460MHz 4810/4819
2-3-3-7 2.6v 480MHz FAIL
2-3-3-7 2.7v 480MHz FAIL
3-4-4-8 2.6v 480MHz Unstable
3-4-4-8 2.7v 480MHz Unstable
3-4-4-8 2.6v 500MHz FAIL
3-4-4-8 2.7v 500MHz FAIL

The memory ran flawlessly at it's rated speed and settings. The score is also quite impressive, as it should be with this memory set to those ultra low timings. Next I wanted to see just how high this memory will overclock. Incredibly, I was able to crank up the bus speed to 460MHz DDR! That's a very nice overclock, especially when you consider that many brands of PC3200 can barely run at their rated speed. You'll also notice on the chart that I was able to run the memory at 480MHz DDR at 3-4-4-8. However, the system was very unstable so I can't call it a successful overclock. Normally overvolting the memory will help gain stability, unfortunately in this case I had the opposite results.

Conclusion

Needless to say, I'm extremely happy with my first experience with PMI's memory. PMI's 3200-1024DGL dual channel DDR kit is an outstanding product with tons of headroom for overclocking. The only problem is that it is a little hard to find. The major resellers like NewEgg and Atacom do not carry the PMI Turbo Series. I did find this product in stock at a site called Neutron USA (http://www.neutronexpress.com), and at a very good price!
