Razor Viper Mouse
Very rarely can a mouse make a difference. Of course most people that can
agree with that concept already have a cordless or optical mouse of choice and
game all the time with it. As far as a gamers choice, there have been a few
companies that have come around with some pretty good gaming devices, but have
fallen on their face when it comes to overall execution and exposure to the
gaming market. The Razor is what you could call a has-been, since it was
introduced not to long ago as the Boomslang mouse. The Boomslang was a very
basic corded mouse that had a optimized USB connection that was more responsive
than your stock USB ported mouse. The Razor is what we would like to call a new
version of the Boomslang, but with a little better execution. Lets have a
look...

Specifications
The Razer Viper possesses the most advanced optical tracking system of any mouse
to-date. This is a high-precision, extremely accurate input device that operates
at anywhere between 25 to 150% more resolution than other optical mice.
Razer mice have always been known for the ultimate in increased sensitivity. We
believe that the Viper is the best mouse ever made for high sensitivity players.
Roughly 70% of the avid gamers in the world play their favorite games at medium
to high sensitivity settings, and this mouse was made for you. For those of you
who play and compete at low sensitivity settings, we do not recommend the Viper
mouse. If you are not certain what type of player you are, our definition of a
low sensitivity player is one who plays at ultra-low settings and moves their
mouse on their mat at around 50 inches per second. If you are one of those
players all is not lost... Razer is hard at work, burning the midnight oil,
developing a future model that will more than adequately support your style of
play.

The Razor comes as you see it here.. opening the box
reveals...

A driver disk, instruction manual and of course the mouse
itself...

The Razor is pretty much plug and play. Just plug it into your
USB port, and install the software. the Razor, as mentioned before, has
optimized USB capability so it is more receptive to the realm of gaming...

Overall Thoughts...
The performance of the Viper Razor is incredible. Taking
advantage of this factor makes playing some of the latest games a lot more fun
than it normally is with a heavy mouse like the MX700 I was using before.
Another positive aspect about the Razor is the fact that it isn't cordless, but
it doesn't suffer from the notorious stuck cord in the computer desk problem
that you would normally associate with other corded mice. You also don't need
any special surface to really run the Razor on, although Viper does sell
performance mats which I'm sure enhance the Razor experience to another level.
Now for the downsides. Registration is mandatory, and Viper seems receptive
enough to make themselves as friendly as possible, even though I had no problem
with the software installation. After installation the Razor has a applet to
configure your mouse with several different variables such as sensitivity, side
to side sensitivity, scrolling sensitivity, button assignment, and test areas
from which to test your settings... I had one little problem with the
configuration. My old mouse, the MX700 has a middle scroll button much like the
Razor, and I love using this button to open "My Computer" so I can browse my
300+ gigs of stuff. With the razor, IT HAS the button but the software version
which is the latest, doesn't have the option to assign this button to anything..
I'm not sure if it was my fault or Viper's, but I tried many times to get this
button custom assigned to no avail. Hopefully for all those "My Computer" lovers
out there, Viper will release software to take advantage of the scroll button in
the very near future. Nevertheless, its performance and overall product
classification is just as advertised so I give it a thumbs up. ClubOC
