Save the planet, buy a hard drive? Recently, Seagate sent out a
press release about their new environmental friendly "low power"
hard drives. These new "LP" hard drives are suppose to reduce the
power cost over the life of the system by as much as 50%. The LP
drives are considered "green" because Seagate says that "typically
70% of these hard drives can be recycled". I'm not what you would
call an environmental activist and my carbon footprint is probably
the size of Texas, but if there is a product out there that can help
me save money while delivering the same amount of performance, then I'm
all for it. On the other hand, I will not sacrifice system
performance to save a buck no more than I will I park my 350
horsepower SUV to drive a 20 horsepower electric mini. Call me a spoiled
American, but I would have to say that the majority of computer
enthusiasts feel the same way. We like our power and speed and we
are not about to give that up. So with that said, let us take a
closer look at the Barracuda LP to see if this GREEN hard drive is
worth our GREEN dollars.
