The 7K1000 model looks like every other drive in the
Deskstar line. Adding things like windows or lights would of course would also
have an effect on its price. Since hard drives are rarely seen, do you really
need a window anyway?

The 3-year
warranty is also very nice to see, all you have to do is not take the label off
of the drive. Most other hard drive manufacturers have decided to shorten their
warranty to 1-year, they say its their way to try and lower the cost per
gigabyte. Granted, if a hard drive is going to fail, it will probably do it
within its first 3 months of use. However, it is nice to know that Hitachi will
offer a replacement drive up to 1,095 days after you buy it.

The majority of the components on the
7K1000 controller's printed circuit board are on the outside,
directed away from the metal chassis of the drive. As with
the previous 7K500 model, thermal concerns have been recognized so the PCB has
been arranged accordingly. Also borrowed from the 7K500 design is use of
the Infineon UAB-M3064-S digital signal processor.
