While no software is necessary to use the drive's USB interface, connecting a storage device to a PC through a network requires communication protocols to be established. This is where the NDAS software comes in. NDAS is Klegg's proprietary software that interfaces directly with the NetDisk unit.

With a typical network attached storage device, the setup process is a little involved and can require the user to know how to navigate around their router and administer IP addresses. The NDAS software handles all of this for you and requires no extra knowledge on the part of the user. This may take away some flexibility, but the NDAS software makes up for that in other areas.

Before you begin, you'll need to have access to the bottom of the NetDisk Mega during the NDAS software install. One of the capabilities of the NDAS software is that it can talk to more than one NetDisk unit. The above image shows the four segment ID and 4 digit KEY that will be required during the install of the software.

The NDAS software will have to be setup on each and every machine that you want to have access to the NetDisk. Keep in mind, this is still a step beyond setting up shared folders in workgroup mode. That's because there is no host PC that needs to be powered on every time a user requires access to a shared folder. So how can you control who has access to the NetDisk?

If you don't want a computer on your network to have any access to the NetDisk, then simply do not install the NDAS software on that machine. Likewise, when you are installing the NDAS software, there are options to allow READ ONLY access to the NetDisk unit. So you do have some flexibility as to who has what access.
