Test System

For this review I'll be using ABIT's AA8 DuraMAX motherboard which is based on Intel's 925X Express chipset.

Hardware Model
Operating System: Windows XP
Motherboard: ABIT AA8 DuraMAX
CPU: Intel Pentium 4
3.4GHz (800MHz)
LGA-775
Video Card: ATi X850XT PE
Memory: OCZ Gold Edition
PC2-4200 DDR2
3-3-3-8

Testing

The people at OCZ have kept their Rally Drive very simple, no drivers are needed for Windows 2000 or XP and there isn't any fancy software to complicate things. It's just a simple storage device. Another thing you'll notice right away is just how small the Rally Drive is. It's smaller than you're average cigarette lighter. The end of the drive also lights up when active...very cool.

Okay, the Rally drive looks cool and even sounds cool, but how does it perform? Let's find out by testing it with Hard Drive Tach and SiSoft Sandra.

Both HD Tach and Sandra show the drive transferring data at 23 to 24Mb/s, that is more than double most of the flash drives we've tested in the past! I don't know how OCZ does it, but they always have a knack for making a good thing even better.

Conclusion

We've tested many flash drives in the past and we've even tested the OCZ Rally 512mb and 2Gb versions and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that the Rally crushes the competition. The Rally is even the smallest flash drive we've seen. As for software, sure it's nice to have a cool James Bond password protected drive, but sometimes things are better when they are simple and easy to use. The Rally Drive is all about keeping things simple, just plug it in and it's ready to use.
