Testing

Testing the hard drive consisted of running a series of Sisoft Sandra benches along with HDtach.  I performed a file transfer test as well.  This test involved transferring a 2.67GB file from my internal hard drive to and from the Plextor.  I'm also going to see if this bad boy really is shock-proof.  It's time to break out the 6-pound sledge and start swinging.  What I'm really going to do is "accidentally" drop the hard drive from my desktop.  I figured that would be the most common height for an accident to occur.  The test system that was used is as follows.

Motherboard Asus P5WD2 Premium
CPU P4 640 LGA775
Video ATI X800XT
Memory 2GB PC2-8000 Platinum Edition XTC
Power Supply AeroCool ZerodBA 620w
Storage 400GB Seagate HDD
Optical Lite-On 16X DVD+/-RW +DL
OS Windows XP SP2

Results

These results aren't too bad considering this is a 5400RPM drive connected via USB.

Finally, the drop test.  I have to admit I was a little nervous doing this.  As fun as it is to destroy new hardware, I didn't want to this hard drive to stop working because I've been using it for the last couple of days and have become fond of it.  The drop was from an average desk about 3 feet tall and the floor was carpeted.  The next drop was from about the same height but onto a tile floor.  I'm happy to report that the silicone bumper did its job.  The hard drive survived both drops with no data loss.  The silicone bumper is designed to protect the hard drive no matter what angle the hard drive is dropped at.  For example, if the hard drive falls flat the bumper will hit first and absorb the impact.  The same will happen if a corner hits first or it lands on its side.

Conclusion

I'm very impressed with the Plextor PX-SP08U.  The drive is compact, lightweight and durable.  Flash drives are just now reaching the 4GB range and are almost the same price as the Plextor.  Why would you pay $100 for a 4GB flash drive when you can have an 80GB Hard drive for under $170?  The Plextor PX-SP08U has the same ease of use as a much smaller flash drive, the Plextor just plugs into a USB port and is ready to use.  There are no drivers to install or power cords to mess with.  If you are looking for a portable storage device, I would highly encourage you to check out the Plextor PX-SP08U.  It has everything you'll need; small physical size, large storage capacity and ease of use.
