Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500GB SATA Notebook Hard Drive

Momentus 7200.4 vs. 5400.6 vs. Barracuda 7200.12:

It will be interesting to see how the Momentus 7200.4 compares to the more typical 5400RPM equivalent as well as Seagate's latest desktop offering.  Since we already have reviews for the Momentus 7200.4 and Barracuda 7200.12, it only makes sense to bring all the data together and see how the 7200.4 stands:

HD Tach: Long Bench / 32MB Zones:

  1TB
Barracuda 7200.12
500GB
Momentus 5400.6
500GB
Momentus 7200.4

Burst Speed:

161.3 MB/s 239.3 MB/s 136.0 MB/s

Average Read:

108.0 MB/s 69.2 MB/s 84.7 MB/s

Average Write:

96.2 MB/s 61.0 MB/s 81.4 MB/s

As you can see, the 500GB 7200.4 fits squarely between the 5400.6 Momentus and the desktop Barracuda, with 22% performance increase on the reads, and a 33% performance increase on the writes.

HD Tach: Quick Bench / 8MB Zones:

  1TB
Barracuda 7200.12
500GB
Momentus 5400.6
500GB
Momentus 7200.4

Burst Speed:

161.4 MB/s 229.0 MB/s 136.6 MB/s

Average Read:

108.0 MB/s 69.6 MB/s 85.1 MB/s

Average Write:

74.7 MB/s 51.1 MB/s 85.3 MB/s

In the 8MB test, the Momentus 7200 actually beat out the the 1TB in write performance by nearly 11MB/s, and took a 22% lead over the 5400 Momentus in average read, and an impressive 67% lead in average write.

HDTune:

  1TB
Barracuda 7200.12
500GB
Momentus 5400.6
500GB
Momentus 7200.4

Burst Speed:

182.1 MB/s 144.4.0 MB/s 110.7 MB/s

Average Read:

102.8 MB/s 66.1 MB/s 80.7 MB/s

Access Time:

13.9ms 18.1ms 15.8 MB/s

I/n HDTune, with the default 64K block size, the 7200 Momentus sits smack-dab in the middle of the 5400 Momentus and the Barracuda in both Read speeds and Access times.  In this case, the average read of the 7200 RPM Momentus is just like the HD Tach tests, taking a 22% lead.

Conclusion:

As we can see from our testing, the new Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500GB packs quite a punch compared to the slower 5400.6 Momentus, even approaching desktop drive speeds.  It would appear that Seagate isn't going to go down without a fight, giving consumers another viable option for their dollar.  In this case, the 7200.4 provides a nice mix of price, performance, capacity and size that is currently unmatched by any other drive on the market.

At $139, the Momentus 7200.4 has a $50 price premium over the Momentus 5400.6, which, at 56%, is pretty significant.  Keep in mind, however, that this product is essentially alone in the market.  That's right, the Momentus 7200.4 is the only 7200 RPM 500GB laptop drive I was able to find.

So where does the Club stand on this drive?  I got to say this drive is full of win.  Anyone looking to invest in a drive for a new laptop, HTPC, or slim PC application would be well advised to look at the Seagate Momentus 7200.4!
