Testing
The drive
Seagate sent over is the Momentus 100 GB, ATA100, with the 8mb cache. Currently, this
one of the best 2.5 hard drive Seagate has to offer.
It still amazes me that technology has allowed Seagate to cram that much
storage capacity on such a small hard drive...
Specifications:
- Model Number: ST9100823A
- Capacity:100 GB
- Speed: 5400 rpm
- Seek time: 12.5 ms avg
- Interface: Ultra ATA/100

For testing I'll be
using a couple devices. The first is an IBM ThinkPad A31p using the
Intel Mobile Pentium 4 1.7GHz processor. The second is an external USB 2.0
hard drive enclosure, which I'll be using with my regular desktop
system. All testing will be conducted with a program called HD Tach
which measures data transfer speed, burst speed, random access speed,
and CPU utilization. Here is how it went down:

External USB 2.0 Mini Hard Drive Enclosure

As you can see,
things really slowed down when I slapped the hard drive in an external
enclosure and hooked it to the USB port of my laptop.
To
give you an idea of just how fast the Momentus is, here is an archived benchmark
of Seagate's own desktop Serial ATA hard drive known as the Barracuda
7200.7 running on an average desktop system.

Conclusion
Even though we don't see a whole lot of 2.5" hard drives, it doesn't take a genius to see that the Momentus with 8mb
buffer is an extremely fast hard drive by any standard, especially for
the notebook market. As of right now, Seagate doesn't have much
competition when it comes to 2.5" hard drives at 100gb capacity. Then
when you consider speed, power consumption, and warrantee, Seagate is
leading the pack. Again, our hats come off to Seagate for another job
well done!
