TEST SYSTEM

For this review I'll be using ABIT's AA8 DuraMAX motherboard which is based on Intel's 925X Express chipset.

Hardware Model
Motherboard: ABIT AA8 DuraMAX
CPU: Intel Pentium 4
3.4GHz (800MHz)
LGA-775
Video Card: ATi X850XT PE
Memory: OCZ Gold Edition
PC2-4200 DDR2
3-3-3-8

TESTING

To test the speed of the hard drive I'll be using Hard Drive Tach RW, donated by Simplisoftware.com. This is an excellent hard drive benchmarking utility that not only is reliable, but very easy to use. Here are the results:

SiSoft Sandra File System Benchmark

Sandra also has a handy drive benchmarking utility. Although it's not as accurate as Hard Drive Tach, it does allow you to make some quick and easy, real world comparisons to other hard drives.

With Sandra, it's easier to see that the 7200.1 Momentus dominates other 2.5 inch hard drives. I threw in the SCSI benchmark for fun... It wont be long before we see speeds like that with 2.5" hard drives!

For another comparison, here is a benchmark of a Seagate 5400.2 2.5" hard drive from a previous review. The Seagate Momentus 7200.1 really makes the 5400.2 look bad. Seagate Momentus drives have come a long way.

CONCLUSION

With incredible hard drives like the Momentus 7200.1, Seagate is positioned to dominate the laptop hard drive market. With huge storage capacities, incredibly high data transfer speeds and an unprecedented 5 year warranty, it's hard to pass up the Momentus. With the performance gap between 2.5" and 3.5" hard drives nearly gone, we should start seeing 2.5" hard drives used in all new applications such as RAID Arrays and mini desktop computers. Congratulations Seagate on another awesome product, you've just been awarded the ClubOC Seal Of Approval!
