We will be testing the
drive today using Sisoft Sandra and HDtach to calculate transfer
speeds. The test system will be:

Sisoft Sandra
2005.1.10.37

The drive transferred
at 29MB/s, which isn't too bad for a USB interface. Let's see
how that compares to the same drive installed in your computer.
Sisoft Sandra
2005.1.10.37

Well we can see that
the drive connected to the IDE header almost doubles the speed.

Conclusion
If speed is a concern
with you, then you may want to consider a second drive inside your
case. However, speed is not what the enclosure is designed
for. The enclosure is designed for portability at the highest
possible speed. You are very limited when it comes to hooking
external devices up to your computer. The simplest way is
going to be USB or Firewire. The ability to take your entire
hard drive from one computer to the next is simply great.
Mapower has made taking your files with you simple and very
inexpensive. At less than $42, you can wait the extra second
that USB 2.0 requires.
