CES Las Vegas - Day 1
Monday, January 7th
Monday
marked the first official day of the Las Vegas Consumer Electronics
Show. If you were staying at the Las Vegas Hilton, getting to the
convention center is a snap. But if you're like us and traveling
from another hotel on the strip, getting anywhere on time is nearly
impossible in Las Vegas traffic. Thanks to Michael behind the wheel
of our trusty rental, we were able to weave in and out of traffic,
bypass the local fuzz, avoid the occasional intoxicated pedestrian,
and still arrive early. Getting into the exhibition a
few moments before the show was made possible with our red Press
Badge and side door reserved for unloading. Getting to the south hall took us through the central hall -
and we still don't have a CLUE what's in there.... We were in a hurry
to get to the South Hall which is generally where most of the PC
gear is located. As we made it though to the South Hall it was
obvious arriving early had its advantages...no crowds...
Intel

On Monday Intel announced 16 new
processors, however we got caught up in their WiMAX display! Intel had a HUGE chunk of
real estate with all sorts of things on display, but the common
theme from Intel at this time was WiMAX.
You can learn more about WiMAX here.

WiMAX is a really exciting
technology innovation taking the industry by storm. If you've
been following the IT world at all, you know how HUGE this movement
could be. At the Intel booth were a couple Indy cars setup on WiMAX
broadcasting back to separate location. The inputs from the Indy
cars were actually controlling the movement of RC cars at a
miniature track. In turn the RC cars broadcasted video back to the
Intel booth in the LVCC. Pretty impressive and a fairly gutsy move
by Intel to prove just how fast this technology is. Microsoft and HP
also had a huge chunk of real estate showing off the expected
devices and technology.
D-Box
 As we
quickly moved though the halls looking for something that caught our
eyes we found D-BOX.
D-BOX was there showing off their simulators that really drew in the
crowds. Of course every gamer in the world wants one, but with an
unofficial price tag of around 15k. Not exactly affordable, but this
is obviously a device for the gamer who has and wants everything.
Cooler Master

If you're a gamer who wants it all, Cooler Master has just the
thing. Cooler Master was at CES showing off
their latest products which included their Cosmos cases dressed up
in
custom CSX paintjobs that were nothing short of amazing! But
again, high end products like these come with a high end price tag.
The CSX cases run about $900, but if you want to be unique, the CSX
cases are probably the best available.

Zotac

Sometimes to find the best deals you need to look past the big
booths and look for the hidden ones, such as the Zotac booth which
featured their video card and motherboard lineup. One of the cards
that caught our eye was the Zotac GeForce 8800GT. Although this card
isn't an all new release, it does give us overclockers a promising
video card capable of ripping out impressive frame rates in even the
most demanding games. We hope to see more from Zotac in the coming
year.
Crucial Technology
Although
Crucial didn't have any big announcements since their Solid State
Drives announcement on January 2nd, however they did have their new
Ballistix Tracer in sweet new red
heatspreaders out on display. We haven't
received the "official" specs on these yet, but we expect to see a
sample in our mailbox real soon.

With thousands of booths and displays spread all over Las Vegas, and
just a few days to cover it all, it is simply impossible to see
everything. Just keep checking back as we post more in the days to
come!
Kingwin

Paul, Michael and Grant Lai
Our good friend Grant Lai from Kingwin invited us to stop by his
booth at the LVCC this year. Grant showed us their latest and
greatest in cooling, external storage, and of course their awesome
Mach 1 power supplies that will just blow your socks off. The
Kingwin ABT1000 is their latest offering to the computer enthusiast
and we can't wait to try it out ourselves! With a massive 150mm
cooling fan, LED lighted modular connectors with aircraft quality
cables, this power supply is destined to be in high demand for 2008.
