I had the pleasure of reviewing a
couple of HD 4870's at launch. I was very
impressed with the performance and price.
Today, I'm going to look at the HD4870 Toxic edition
card from Sapphire. The card comes overclocked
right out of the box and features Sapphires own
Vapor-X cooler. It will be interesting to see
how Sapphire improved a card that was already very
good.

President Bush signs
pork filled bailout bill
Today President Bush signed the
massive $700 billion plan that our country's economic leaders
believe will keep our country afloat. However the majority of US
citizens do not believe in the plan nor do they believe the average
person should be stuck with the bill for bailing out the rich. I for
one believe this bill will only put off the inevitable collapse of
our economy that is overloaded with dept and out of control
spending.
Even this "emergency" spending bill is so stuff with
pork that it will make your head explode just reading about it. For
example page 262 and 263 outlines provisions that will aid the
manufacturers of "certain wooden arrows designed for use by
children". Another one being talked about is tax breaks for race
track owners, or another one that helps out rum producers in Puerto
Rico. The pork goes on and on and on... After reading about all the
pork stuffed into this bill I can only conclude that we are indeed
doomed to fail. Our government is doing such a fantastic job
that they should just vote themselves in another pay raise and take
the remainder of the year off.
Read about the details of this bill

Economic Dooms Day
This week has been a slow one with very little to
absolutely no relevant news trickling in from the industry. Okay,
good news that is... With the economy screeching to a halt,
unemployment on the rise, and gas prices still hovering at painful
highs, it may be quite some time before consumer confidence is
restored. Now I'm sounding like a politician... The bottom line is
things are probably going to get much worse before they get any
better. With our government believing the only way to fix a problem
is by throwing more money at it, things will never get better.

Two new graphics families from Sapphire
SAPPHIRE Technology, the leading manufacturer
and worldwide supplier of AMD/ATI based graphics solutions
is introducing two new graphics families aimed at mainstream
users.
The
new SAPPHIRE HD 4550 is a new mainstream product based on
the architecture of the highly successful HD 4000 series.
With its 80 stream processors, core clock speeds of 600MHz
and carrying 512MB of GDDR3 memory clocked at 900MHz (1.8GHz
effective) the SAPPHIRE HD 4550 brings features previously
associated only with high end cards to the cost conscious
user. These include DX 10.1 compatibility, on board hardware
UVD version 2.0 with support for AMD’s Avivo HD, HDMI
support with 7.1 surround sound as well as extremely low
power operation featuring AMD PowerplayTM dynamic power
management.
The SAPPHIRE HD 4350 has a similar
architecture, and has the same 80 stream processors and
600MHz core clock speed, but uses the more cost effective
DDR2 memory running at 400MHz (800MHz effective). All the
other features are similar to the SAPPHIRE HD 4550.

OCZ
Technology Introduces the HydroFlow CPU Waterblock
Sunnyvale, CA—September 25, 2008—OCZ Technology Group, Inc.
a worldwide leader in innovative, ultra-high performance and
high reliability memory and computer components, today
unveiled the “HydroFlow” HF-MK1 Waterblock for superior CPU
watercooling. Designed with the highest possible exchange
rate between the block and coolant, the HydroFlow can be
easily integrated into any enthusiast system and help
efficiently lower the processor temperature.
"The HydroFlow HF-MK1 targets the highest possible thermal
exchange rate between a solid body and the surrounding
fluid, while maintaining enough cross sectional area for
superior thermal conductance within the fin structure,”
commented Dr. Michael Schuette, V.P. of Technology
Development at OCZ Technology. "Additionally, the relieved
contact area concentrates the pressure on the actual die
area of any processor, thereby minimizing the thermal
interface material-induced loss in heat dissipation. In
short, the HydroFlow epitomizes the recent advances in fluid
cooling at an affordable price.”

It was just a few short weeks ago that I looked
at the latest salvo in ATi's bloody war for market share, known as
the HD 4870 X2. Not content to rest at that, I have decided to
take this review to a whole new level and dedicate an entire review
to HD 4870 X2 Crossfire X (herein known as Quadfire). While AMD
really has done a number to nVidia in the mid-range and high end
single card demographics, one market segment that has been left
unmolested is the high-end multi-GPU segment. Could the 4870 X2
Crossfire X change this?
This is what I hope to find out.
